Henry Beukema

United States Navy

In September 2016, Hank Beukema retired as a thirty-seven-year western Pennsylvania grant maker, having spent more than 12 years with the Heinz Endowments and The Pittsburgh Foundation as a Program Officer, and 24+ years at McCune Foundation as Executive Director. Since January 2000, he had also been Executive Director of the Pitcairn-Crabbe Foundation, a philanthropy associated with Shadyside Presbyterian Church. After graduating from Yale in 1968, and receiving a reserve commission from the Navy’s Officer Candidate School in Newport, he served as Gunnery and Missile Officer on the guided missile light cruiser USS Leahy. After two at-sea tours on the Leahy, Hank taught military history and naval science at Vanderbilt University’s Naval ROTC unit, before leaving naval service in 1975. In addition to his position as a board member of Veterans Place, Hank’s volunteer work includes Shadyside Presbyterian Church, Winchester Thurston School, and Eye and Ear Foundation.
