Suicide Prevention and Awareness with Veterans Place
Suicide Awareness Month is an important time to remember those who have lost their lives to suicide and to educate oneself on how to best prevent suicide. This year, it’s essential to raise awareness for veterans, many of whom are struggling with transitioning from military to civilian life.
988: National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
In 2020, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) responded to this need by creating a new three-digit National Suicide Prevention Hotline: 988. The hotline is fast and easy to use; when you dial 988 from any phone, you will be connected with a trained crisis counselor from the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in just seconds. To access the Veterans Crisis Line, dial 988, then press 1.
Since its launch last summer, 988 has been helping veterans and other individuals struggling with mental health issues. It has been instrumental in providing much-needed support and resources to those who may need access to the same level of care at a local center.
How Can I Help Raise Awareness for Suicide Awareness Month?
This Suicide Awareness Month, be sure to reach out to any veteran you know and let them know that 988 is there for them if they ever need it.
Additionally, take a moment to familiarize yourself with available resources in your community so that you can help direct someone toward appropriate assistance if needed. Together we can make a difference for our veterans and all those affected by suicide.
If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, please call 988 for immediate assistance. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All calls are confidential and free.
