Veterans Place Calls for Deeper Military Appreciation Through Housing, Employment, and Long-Term Support

Military Appreciation Month highlights the need for practical support, community connection, and veteran services

Veterans Place is using Military Appreciation Month this May to encourage a broader conversation about what meaningful support for veterans looks like today, emphasizing that recognition alone does not address the challenges many face after military service.

The Pittsburgh-based nonprofit says Military Appreciation Month remains an important time for public recognition, but it also presents an opportunity to focus on long-term solutions such as stable housing, employment pathways, mental health support, and community reintegration.

Military appreciation is often expressed through public ceremonies, discounts, and thank-you messages. While these gestures carry value, Veterans Place notes that many veterans continue to face barriers related to housing stability, workforce transition, food access, and support systems well after their service ends.

Through its programs, Veterans Place helps veterans build more stable, independent lives. The organization reported 2,253 veteran visits to its Resource Center, 3,211 food pantry visits, and 101 veterans placed in sustainable employment. Leaders say those numbers reflect both the ongoing needs within the veteran community and the importance of accessible, practical support.

“Military appreciation should lead to action that supports veterans in practical ways,” said Jessica Gilmore, Director of Operations and Development at Veterans Place. “Housing stability, employment opportunities, food access, and supportive services are what help veterans move forward after service. Recognition matters, but it needs to be paired with resources that address real needs.”

As part of its Military Appreciation Month outreach, Veterans Place will host a Memorial Day Cookout for veterans from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, May 22, at the Veterans Resource Center on Washington Boulevard. The event will provide an opportunity for veterans to gather, connect with the Veterans Place community, and access support in a welcoming setting.

Brian Cavanagh, a veteran, described the organization as “where the light of hope is alive and well” and encouraged veterans facing hunger, addiction, depression, or homelessness to visit Veterans Place of Washington Boulevard.

Veterans Place is also encouraging employers, policymakers, donors, and community organizations to play an active role in supporting veterans beyond Military Appreciation Month. That support can include creating employment opportunities, investing in veteran services, volunteering, donating, or helping connect veterans to available resources.
